Friction Quartet and acclaimed pianist/composer and 2021 Guggenheim Fellow Helen Sung present ‘Quartet+’, her latest release on Sunnyside Records.
Having lived much of her life at the intersections of different worlds —classical and jazz, being an American-born daughter of Chinese immigrants—Helen harmonizes these worlds with joy and humanity celebrating women’s artistry and music by pairing her jazz quartet with a classical string quartet.
Helen takes the listener on a ride through musical time and space with her original compositions as well as her arrangements of works by renowned women musicians such as Geri Allen, Mary Lou Williams, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Carla Bley, and Marian McPartland.
